Avoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working Mom
Avoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working MomAvoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working MomReturning to work is a tough transition for any mom. Maybe you dread it, maybe you cant wait, but its sure to surprise you. Here are eight common pitfalls working moms can fall into on their way back to the workplace. Pitfall 1 Waiting to Line Up Child Care When I was pregnant with my first baby, I got unsolicited advice on everything, from what to eat to what to buy. But nobody told me the fruchtwein useful information- get on waiting lists for daycare centers immediately. By the time I toured centers the month before my delivery, I discovered that wait times for infant care were over one year Panicked, I signed up for a half dozen different lists and departureed praying.Fortunately, I was able to take six months leave, and our top choice daycare found a spot for us. Even if you dont anticipate needing daycare, sign up anyway. Maybe youll have to go back to work sooner than expected, or you r mom or nanny will suddenly back out of caring for your baby. If you had laid the groundwork ahead of time, itll be much easier to figure out last-minute care. Pitfall 2 Being Passive About Child Care Once youve gotten on some daycare wait lists or lined up a nanny, dont cross the task off your list and forget about it. Youve taken the first step in the most important new relationship of a working moms life, and you must nurture it. Daycare centers are run by human beings, and, obviously, babysitters are people too. They want to know youll be easy to work with and youll value the important job they do. Make sure to check in with your top choice daycare centers or the babysitter youve lined up. Call after the baby is born, and periodically during your maternity leave. Im pretty sure it was my bi-monthly calls to our daycare center that got us a spot ahead of schedule. I aimed to show eager interest without nagging. If youre in a bind, showing up in person is the most effective t echnique for getting into child care. Providers prefer engaged, interested parents. I know two new moms who strolled their baby into a center the week before they had to return to work and walked out with a spot. Pitfall 3 Going Back Full Steam Whether your maternity leave is six weeks, six months, or six years, returning to work is going to be an adjustment. If possible, return mid-week. You get a short first week back at work, and your baby gets an easy introduction to child care. You might also want to explore going back on a part-time schedule for the first few weeks or months. Some find it easier to stay in touch with work during maternity leave to help delegate work and keep projects moving along. That way they dont return to a pile of uncompleted tasks. Others would rather make a clean break and come back to a fresh start, or even to a brand new position. This tactic works best if your job is more independent and you can wrap up projects before your maternity leave and st art new ones when you return. Pitfall 4 Going It Alone You want to succeed as a mom. You want to feel capable. You can achieve both of these goals by asking for help. Youre more likely to find a happy balance as a working mom if you admit you have needs and require assistance. Trying to go it alone will only push you over the edge of exhaustion and frustration. Accept support from friends or relatives, whether its a few hours of babysitting or a casserole that saves you preparing dinner one night. And if you are raising your child with a partner, make sure its a true partnership, where you give and take help. Once you return to your job, seek out other moms at your workplace. They can give you vital information, from which paperwork you need to which managers to spare the baby stories. Moms of older children can reassure you that kids turn out fine even when theyre in childcare. Pitfall 5 Imagining Your Child Miserable You say goodbye, close the door, and head off to work. F rom that moment on, you dont know what your child is thinking or doing for the rest of the day. Dont make the mistake of imagining her crying her eyes out missing mommy. Thats usually just the first minute until a shiny toy or playmate distracts her. Some moms hide outside the closed door until the separation sobs subside. Or sneak in when the work day is over, to catch the children playing, dancing to music, or quietly enjoying a book. Ask your childs caregiver to take pictures during the day so you can see him engaged in activities or enjoying a laughing hug. Hang them over your desk as a reality check for when your fantasies turn sour. With older kids, schedule weekly phone check-ins. You can get a lot more out of a tween on the walk home from school than the half hour before dinner. Pitfall 6 Apologizing Youve got enough on your mind without worrying about what other people think of you. Dont waste an apology on the lady in the grocery store who frowns at the combo of your s uit and stroller. Youll need all your apologies for when you wake your husband at 200 a.m. to get the baby, but it turns out shes sleeping soundly and her cries were just in your dreams. Pitfall 7 Expecting No Bumps The first week went smoothly. Youre loving the return to an interesting job in the adult world. And then your baby gets her first cold and wont sleep all night before your big presentation. Relax. Mama said there would be days like this. Youll get through it, and next time youll know to keep your sleep reserves high in case of an ear infection. You might want to put an emergency bag in your car with clean clothes for baby and mom, snacks, or even a new toy. You may get stuck in bad traffic with a screaming child or have to run an errand before you return home. Pitfall 8 Sticking to Your Guns Blindly Many working moms are used to making a plan and pushing forward until it succeeds. Life with a baby is rarely so straightforward. Give yourself permission to readjust your arrangements, whether its your work schedule or child care. Listen to your gut. If something truly isnt working for you or your family, change it.

Can Enlisting Put the Past Behind You
Can Enlisting Put the Past Behind YouCan Enlisting Put the Past Behind YouUsing the military to escape your past and transform yourself is a long-fabled concept. The idea of losing yourself and forging a new identity in the profession of arms is best captured by the popular image of the French Foreign Legionnaire, who escapes a sordid past and assumes a new name far from the land of his birth. And the rags-to-ranks (-to-riches) story of the citizen-soldier, especially since the introduction of the Montgomery GI Bill in 1944, has been a part of countless American success stories. But does it work? Legal Troubles Lets skip the idea that you can escape a jail sentence by enlisting. Rod Powers, covers that topic very well in his article Join the Military or Go To Jail? For the purposes of this article, well discuss instead the idea of escaping ones personal history - bad neighborhoods, bad families, bad relationships, et cetera. Success Stories Without digging up statistics, ther e is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that people have used an enlistment (or a full career) in the US military to transcend their troubled backgrounds. Ive heard many contemporaries speak of visiting their hometown after years away in the service, only to find with each (often less frequent) visit that everything is the same - including the same dead-end folks from high school, now in their 20s and older, smoking dope in their parents basements. In the meantime, the professional soldier has seen and done more than fruchtwein at home can even digest. One of the most famous examples from US history is Ulysses S. Grant, a lackluster student, and an unsuccessful farmer. In spite of this, he found his calling as commander of all US forces during the Civil War, received Lees surrender at Appomattox, and later served as the 18th President of the United States (arguably bedrngnis a very good one, but still.) Closer to home, I know that my late grandfather-in-law - a US Marine in World Wa r II who later retired as a Sergeant Major in the reserves - escaped a working-class background, an abusive father, and the slums of Depression-era Brooklyn to become a respected civil servant, scion of his community, and comfortable dual-pensioner of the armed forces and the US Postal Service. Even I used the military to escape some of my troubles. With a middle-class background, a strong mother, and an excellent education, I cant lay much claim to a troubled life. But for me, joining the Marines was how I learned to be a man after witnessing my parents divorce, spending my adolescence as a quiet and unpopular kid, and lacking strong male role models. Three months with the Drill Instructors at Parris Island and all of my subsequent experiences proved a solid foundation for my life today as a husband, student, and professional. Escaping Emotional Problems Not so fast, though. The fact is, our intangible problems - our emotions - arent so easy to ansturm away from. In my case, gr owing up in fast-forward through boot camp and beyond gave me a lot of tools, but it didnt resolve the burden of my parents divorce, which lay buried and unexamined in the meantime. As a result, Ive been through therapy, relationship issues, and even divorce at an early age. My experience as a Marine helped equip me to face those challenges, but it wasnt the cure. I knew this later in my career when I took on the role of Career Planner and encountered some young Marines hoping to escape to another job, another duty station, another life - all to run away from deep emotional grief with their families and partners. My advice for them These are problems that will follow you no matter where you go. They can be dealt with only by facing them head-on and seeking support. Ignore them at your (and your careers) peril. Financial Obligations Having discussed emotional issues, heres a brief footnote on escaping your financial obligations - because there isnt much to say. Divorced and payin g support to a spouse or children? Trying to get out of debt? Its not going to work, plain and simple. In fact, joining the military puts you firmly on the grid as far as the government is concerned - a grid where they can yank your entire paycheck without your permission to cover debts like unpaid child support. (You really would have to join the French Foreign Legion if thats all youre after, though Im not so sure its that simple for them anymore, either.) A Note About Reservists It goes without saying that by joining the reserves - performing part-time duty right near your home - its not as easy to escape as for an active duty enlistee. However, you still receive the training, camaraderie, experiences, and benefits that can be your tools for success. Remember how I was talking about my own escape from troubles? For most of my ten years in the Marine Corps, I was a drilling reservist, living (between training and overseas deployments) right where I grew up. How about that?

4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisor
4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisor4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisorYour supervisor doesnt have toact like a bully for you to feel anxious during meetings. Sometimes, just the thought of having to sit in front of your boss can be terrifying. Heres how to deal with nerves when a meeting with him or zu sich is on the books.Let your enthusiasm take overGreatist features advice from Gail Saltz, M.D., a psychiatry professor at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, who recommends thinking of certain things to enhance how your feelThink I feel amped up because Im going to go in and kill this meeting, or My boss is going to be really impressed. She also recommends writing down these positive affirmations. To some degree, youre forcing yourself into a positive scenario, but even if you dont fully believe yourself, youll help transition your nerves into excited energy. Make sure youre well-versed in different conceptsJohn Baldoni, an author, leadership consultant, speaker and coach, writes in the Harvard Business Review about how managers can make small talk with bigwigs. One of his top tips is to go in prepared, which is something you can do before having a meeting with your own supervisorLearn the issues the senior team is focused on. Ideally everyone in the company should know the strategic priorities. Bone up on these so you know them, too. Think in advance what you will say to a senior person if you meet her in person. Work out a key message about your projects, your career and yourself. This is good practice whether you meet a senior person or not. Finally, if its a more social meeting, you might try to learn of a bosss personal interests - hobbies, sports he or she likes, or their volunteer activities.Dont put your supervisor on too high of a pedestalTry not to overdo it. HubSpots Director of Content, Corey Wainwright, saysin an article about overcoming awkwardness around supervisors, that you should not take your assumptions about their behavior too farIf they respond awkwardly from time to time, dont read into it. They couldve just come from a stressful conversation. They could be distracted. Or maybe they just slept poorly last night. Push past those instances and dont let the awkwardness build on itself. When it doubt, revert the discussion to the work at handDeborah Hankin, VP of talent at consulting firm SYPartners, told Monster what to do during awkward situations with your supervisorWhen those awkward moments do happen, its appropriate to go back to confidently asking innocuous questions about the business at hand such as, When do you think we may hear back from so and so? and What are the next steps you see for this assignment?

If every interaction with a client is like pulling teeth, your job quickly becomes tiresome. However, when you become friends with a business partner, you must be aware of maintaining a sense of professionalism despite your newfound connection. Here are some ways that you can effectively toe the line between friend and business partnerBe aware of what you say on social mediaIts great if you want to friend your client on Facebook or follow each other on Instagram. But once you do that, you must be conscience of what youre posting. Yes, theyre your friend, but you also dont want them questioning your professionalism or your ability to do your job well. If youre constantly posting about drinking or being hungover, they may start to doubt your ability to meet a deadline. If you arent willing to make your social media content more clie nt-friendly, keep your online connection limited to professional sites like LinkedIn.Be positiveEveryone has schwimmbad days. But if you constantly take to social media to complain about your job (or worse, your clients) then youre jeopardizing your relationship with your business partners. 10 Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid
10 Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid10 Cover Letter Mistakes to AvoidWhether its put your best first forward, you only get one chance to make a great first impression, or some other popular saying, theres solid wisdom in the idea that the introduction often sets the tone for future interactions and success. This is even mora so when it comes to the job hiring process. An eye-catching, informative and professional titelseite letter sets the stage for a further review of your resume and can often make the difference between a callback and getting overlooked for the role. To underscore the importance of a perfect titel letter, weve put together a handy list of ten cover letter mistakes to avoid,No Cover LetterWhile some positions admittedly only call for submission of a resume, there is typically nothing to prohibit the inclusion of a brief summary of your relevant skills and experience to go along with your cv. Even less forgivable is the situation where a cover letter is optional or even requested and you fail to provide one. Cover letters are an excellent opportunity to make a sales pitch for your candidacy. Failing to include the document in the first place will quickly see your candidacy downgraded.Impersonal GreetingCover letters should be addressed to the individual assigned to the review of your application. In most cases, the job listing will include a name or title of who the candidate will be reporting to. This person will often be the first reviewer or final decision maker and its always best to address to them specifically. Avoid generic to whom it may concern salutations or dear sir/madam formats as they can make your cover letter appear unprofessional or stuffy from the get-go. As a final point on salutations, be sure to keep your titles gender neutral to best avoid any inadvertent offensiveness.Generic Cover LetterSure, there may be plenty of cover letter templates available to choose from, but that doesnt mean you should be following format and conten t to the T. Template cover letters start to blend together when a hiring manager is reviewing dozens or hundreds of submissions. Sticking to a tight format also undermines the whole concept of allowing the prospective employer to get to know your individual personality better. There are several basic sets of information a cover letter should include (well get to some of those later). Include that information, but try to do so in a format that fits naturally with your writing style and the position you may be applying for.Lengthy Cover LetterA cover letter and resume arent like your high school dissertations on Shakespearean influence in modern literature extra words wont earn you bonus points. With rare exceptions, a cover letter and resume should be no more than one page each in length. The one-page criteria isnt an invitation to shrink margins or reduce the font size to microscopic, either. Two to three short paragraphs should be plenty to lay out your goals, major career mileston es, and reasons for applying for this particular job.Summarizing Your ResumeAnother big mistake that plenty of cover letter writers make is formatting the missive to be a simple summary of your job resume. Rather than a watered down or narrative version of your work history and skills, the cover letter should focus more on the specific position, your long-term career plans and other information that may be difficult to convey in a resumes more stylized format. Be sure to talk about how you believe youd provide value to the company (more on that in just a moment). Its All About YouEver been on that awkward first date where the other person at the table seems unable to pick a topic that doesnt revolve around how awesome of a catch he/she is? Focusing solely on your own qualities or characteristics in the cover letter is the career equivalent of this car crash of a social interaction. While offering an elaboration on your key traits and strengths as an employee is an important aspect of the cover letter, the details should all be crafted to the job youre interviewing for and focused on how you would contribute to the team, company, and industry. Review and re-review the job description for the relevant and desired traits. Using ansicht facts, use your cover letter to illustrate parallels from your past experiences.Getting Too PersonalAt risk of stretching the awkward first date analogy out, no one wants to hear about aunt Carols bunion issues over appetizers and cocktails. Skip the personal details such as political party affiliations, weekend exercise routines, marital status and more. Not only are these questions irrelevant, they may create awkward HR scenarios for your hiring manager which could lead to your resume getting passed over altogether.Missing Contact InformationRemember the old if a tree falls in an empty forest query? This important cover letter mistake to avoid involves leaving out the relevant details necessary for following up on your submission. A well-formatted cover letter should have a header section that similar or identical to that of your CV and includes email, phone, and optional geographical/mailing info. If you play hard to get with your contact info, youre likely to get skipped over altogether.Grammatical ErrorsIt seems as if the top piece of resume advice preached across career sights large and small involves ensuring your information forwarded to potential employers is accurate and free of any glaring errors. Were certainly not ones to stop a good thing in its tracks. Leaving in obvious grammatical or spelling errors in your cover letter in todays modern day and age is nearly unforgivable. Spell check and grammar tools abound and if thats not enough, there are always too good, old-fashioned friends and colleagues to give your cover letter a fresh pair of eyes. Proofread any communications to potential employers before punching that send button and save yourself the inevitable rejection that will follow otherwise .Inability to Follow DirectionsLast, but certainly not least, on our list of mistakes to avoid on your cover letter is a candidates inability to read the employment application for specific requirements or directions that may be provided by future employers. While overlooking minor details such as word length or questions to be answered may be perceived as not such a big deal by applicants, to hiring managers this is a huge red flag that you dont have the chops needed for follow through and attention to detail. Read the entire job description and resume submission guidelines to ensure you dont undercut your candidacy at the outset.Cover letters are valuable tools when used in the hands of savvy candidates. Follow our guidelines for avoiding obvious mistakes and youll be a step or more beyond the competition when it comes to scoring that callback or, better yet, the position of your dreams.

Job Interview Clothes That Kill (Your Chances)
Job Interview Clothes That Kill (Your Chances)Job Interview Clothes That Kill (Your Chances)The right job interview clothes wont seal the deal, but the wrong outfit can sink your chances. Fair or not, first impressions are largely based on appearances, and dressing inappropriately may be the most detrimental mistake job candidates make in interviews. If nothing else, employers expect job seekers to dress professionally.Whats considered the wrong outfit?Robert Half has asked managers that very question. The following examples represent some of the most bizarre job interview attire mistakes weve collected from our surveys of employers over the years A Star Trek T-shirt.A job candidate showed up for an interview in a new suit - with the price tags still hanging from the sleeve.Pajamas with slippers.A catsuit.A Hawaiian shirt and jeans.A candidate came to his interview wearing sunglasses and licking a lollipop. He commented to the hiring manager, This is my style. You can take it or lea ve it.An applicant wore the uniform from his former employer. You may think that all you have to worry about is tripping up over tough job interview questions. But clothes matter, too, and because you never get a second chance to make a first impression, here are five general job interview attire guidelines to consider1. Dress to impressPlay it safe (and smart) by wearing business-appropriate attire. While dress codes have become more relaxed in some accounting firms in recent years, a job interview isnt the appropriate venue to display your eclectic or laid-back sense of style. Even if you think the office has a more casual environment, err on the side of caution and dress a step above what you think is expected. A polished appearance provides instant credibility and tells the interviewer youre a serious candidate.2. Aim for classy and comfortableYes, you want to look the part. But you also want to come across as relaxed as possible. If you purchase new interview attire, wear it a f ew times to break it in before your meeting. When youre uncomfortable, its difficult to exude confidence and concentrate on the questions youre being asked. As soon as youve figured out what NOT to wear, head over to our Accounting and Finance Professionals Career Center. 3. Everything in moderationIts not just about the clothes you don the perfume or cologne you wear also matters. You dont want the most memorable thing about you to be the scent you leave lingering in the office. As such, go light on the fragrances. The same guidelines apply to accessories. While these aspects of your wardrobe can allow you to express your personality, be judicious in your choices. Less is usually more.4. Iron out the detailsEven the nicest, most professional outfit can look sloppy and unattractive when wrinkled. Dont rush the day of your interview. Make sure your clothes are free of wrinkles, stains and lint the night before.5. Bring a backup outfitIf it can go wrong, it will go wrong. As Murphys La w dictates, if youre going to spill an iced latte in your lap, youre probably going to do it on interview day. Guard against bad luck by bringing another outfit with you if at all possible. Its worth noting that dressing to impress isnt just important in interviews - its critical once youre on the job, too. In a Robert Half survey, 80 percent of the executives said clothing choices affect an employees chances of earning a promotion. How should you dress for a video interview? Check out our tips for acing this kind of meeting with a hiring manager.

Ottmar Mergenthaler
Ottmar Mergenthaler Ottmar Mergenthaler Ottmar Mergenthaler Ottmar Mergenthaler (1854 1899) simply and literally kept the newspaper business running for close to a century. His linotype welches an improvement on the Gutenberg Press and helped make moveable type obsolete. Previously, publishing welches done with manual composition through typesetting by hand, one letter at a time. Mergenthalers was such a celebrated invention that Thomas Edison himself called it the eighth wonder of the world. In explaining the machine, Doug Wilson, director of zeilensetzmaschine, The Movie, says, Its similar to a giant typewriter that makes principal type from a pot of molten lead. Now it could print a whole line of type in one motion, cutting down significantly on printing time. Before it, no city had a daily newspaper more than eight pages and most towns didnt have one at all because of how hard it was to print, says Wilson. Imagine our world of Twitter and previously you had week-old news. Mergentha ler changed all that.Ottmar Mergenthalers invention changed the newspaper industry forever.Born in the German town of Hachtel, he moved to Baltimore, MD, in 1872 and started working with his uncle making patented models. James Clephane, who has been credited with helping the development of the typewriter, was a court stenographer trying to figure out a way to reproduce his notes faster. He approached Mergenthaler with an invention from Charles Moore that wasnt getting it done and asked to improve upon it. He worked 10 to 15 years to get it right and went through many different iterations, Wilson says. He was constantly trying to perfect it. Eventually it was cranked out first for the New York Herald Tribune. Now the public was about to be informed in a way they never were before, Wilson says.Wilson explains that the machine didnt make him rich, both because he wasnt a businessman but also because of the greed of others. After he created it, a group of newspaper bigwigs similar to Wi lliam Randolph Hearst bought control of the company and forced Mergenthaler out, Wilson says. The group wanted to control it because no one else had it. Hold on to it and what chance did the competition stand? What happened was they bankrupted the company and then eventually the other investors revolted against it. When they bought back the company, they were able to bring Mergenthaler back, too.Today Wilson says theres a small group of fans devoted to the linotype but that it lost favor in the media in the 1950s and 1960s when photographic typesetting and offset lithography came into play. But he believes Mergenthalers legacy will always be secure. He in many ways was the victim of dying young and making a machine that wasnt used in every household, he says. Everyone who read benefited from it but just didnt know who did it. Theres no question that his ingeniousness put him in the conversation with the great inventors like Edison and Ford. Again, think of how important quick news is to us today. You can say it all started with Mergenthaler.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Imagine our world of Twitter and previously you had week-old news. Mergenthaler changed all that.Doug Wilson, director of Linotype The Movie
